Database Development

Feldman Consulting Enterprises, LLC has experience with databases from the very small up to databases that are large enough to run operations at nationally-known financial institutions and manufacturing companies. We have experience with issues such as scalability, disaster planning and recovery, security, encryption, and replication to ensure your data is available when and where it is needed yet is appropriately protected.

How can a custom database help you?

  • Replace complex and messy Excel spreadsheets - Do you have a complicated Excel spreadsheet that is impossible to maintain and doesn't ever seem to provide the right numbers? By having the data properly structured in a database those issues can be eliminated.

  • Eliminate inconsistencies and errors in your data - By having data in only one place and having the data validated at input you'll never have to decide which piece of data is right or wonder why it is inaccurate

  • Design your data and interface around the way your business operates - It's difficult to work with software that doesn't quite do what you need it to. By having it designed around the way you work the software will do exactly what you need it to so it matches with the way that you work.

  • Make it easy for people to accomplish what they need to - By making it easy for people to store, retrieve, and modify the data that they need to everyone at your company can make better, quicker decisions and be more productive instead of spending hours trying to figure things out and getting frustrated

  • One centralized secure data repository - all your data can be in one place that is easily secured and backed up, making it much easier to manage

  • Automate routine processes - Do you need to do things like sending out notifications to certain clients or prospects on a regular basis? A database can make sure the right information is used and that is up-to-date.

  • Keep your website up-to-date - if you have something that you want publicly available for your customers, such as a list of partners or a calendar of events, a database can automatically provide this information on your website

  • Provide reporting capabilities and insights that you never had before - With all your data in one place it will finally be possible to see things that you've never seen before that can help you make better decisions quickly. You can also free up the time of people who are manually creating reports.

Our databases have been used simultaneously by people at all levels of companies and even remotely to handle functions such as taking applications online, processing data, and providing reports, all while meeting or exceeding industry-standard practices for data security, storage, and retention. By having a database custom-designed to meet your needs everyone at your company will be able to accomplish what they need to very easily and you'll be able to leverage your data to find new insights.

Would you like to be able to instantly generate graphs like this?

Typical types of problems we've solved:

  • Do you know how much of each product you have in inventory?
  • Do you know which employee last worked on an item?
  • Can you instantly make a chart showing sales of an item for the last 12 months?
  •

    Ask yourself:

  • Am I spending more time than I should generating reports?
  • Are errors in my data causing extra work for my employees and me?
  • Am I having difficulty getting the charts and data I need to make good decisions?
  • Am I concerned about data security and protection against disasters and failures?
  • Is data stored in multiple places and often inconsistent?
  • Are my current systems painful to use?
  •

Did you answer "yes" to any of the above questions? We can help!

Here's how we've helped other clients harness the power of databases. You could be next!

Case One - Streamlining the Processes at a Financial Institution

A financial institution that specialized in energy lending to consumers needed a loan origination system that allowed them the flexibility to track many unique parameters in order to properly administer different government programs with special requirements. Commercially available solutions were too rigid in their capabilities and weren't able to meet these needs. In addition those systems were very cumbersome to use and poorly integrated with the internal processes of the company, requiring lots of extra effort to manually process data from the loan applications. The company also had many data reporting requirements for the various programs that couldn't be met with what they had.

A brand new database solution was designed to meet the needs of the company. The new database was designed to interface with many of the existing systems that the company used, from gathering loan applications from the website to pulling credit to creating and sending out the appropriate documents to customers and contractors. The database was developed in a modular fashion with scalability in mind so that future needs could be handled with a minimum of additional effort. The employees of the company were involved in every step of the development process to ensure that their needs were met and that the system would be well-accepted by the people using it on a daily basis. The solution allowed the company to drastically decrease the turnaround time and labor for processing loan applications while enabling them to easily analyze data for the programs that they were administering.

The system had approximately 30 simultaneous users from various departments in the company, including management, accounting, sales, marketing, and underwriting.

    Results:

    • Processed over 1,500 loan applications per month, including credit reports and document generation

    • Usable by everyone at company in all roles due to intense collaboration with users during development

    • Flexible enough to handle many specialized and unique loan programs

    • Easily generated high-value reports for management and provided data for web services

    • Protected valuable business data with automatic backups and off-site data replication

Case Two - Redesign of a Financial Security Cashflow Engine

A financial institution that processed scenarios of loan portfolios to generate cashflow projections needed to take their software to the next level - and fast - to maintain contracts with their clients. The existing system was originally developed in Excel, which required a lot of manual intervention to use and maintain, and was quickly becoming overloaded with the volumes of calculation that needed to be done to grow the operation.

A database solution was developed to manage the data. This made it much easier to automate the entire process from start to finish and track jobs, which was a big selling point with clients. A special cashflow generation engine was developed to compute cashflows several orders of magnitude faster than was possible previously, allowing for more throughput and larger jobs. The database also greatly simplified the generation of the necessary reports that were returned to the clients. In addition this design will make it much easier to add enhancements to the system in the future.

The bulk of this project was completed in under two weeks from concept to functioning system and helped the financial institution maintain and improve relationships with their clients who had been seeking improvements in the process for several months.

    Results:

    • Concept to functioning system in under two weeks

    • Processing speed increased by several orders of magnitude

    • Financial institution able to handle much more business and improve relationships with clients

    • Database design makes it easy to add enhancements in the future

Case Three - Inventory Management for a Processing Company

A company that specializes in processing and recycling plastic needed a customized inventory system to track and manage their materials because of the nature of their operations. They had a system in place, but unfortunately it was a disaster waiting to happen for several reasons. It was not only incredibly slow, prone to random unexplainable errors, and difficult to use, but the original developer was nowhere to be found and the company had no way of installing or maintaining the software. Later it was determined that the entire backend rested in one very poorly-structured Access database.

A brand new database was developed in MSSQL with a structure that reflected the way the company processed material to more appropriately handle its operations. Not only did this run much more quickly, but the data was also more secure and it was much easier to see and analyze material flow. An interface was designed which allowed everyone at the company to accomplish the tasks that they needed to, from the workers in the warehouse recording their tasks to upper management tracking material and generating reports. Now the company has a database that is maintainable and much easier to use, making their operations much more efficient.

    Results:

    • Business is much better protected against data disaster

    • Database is much easier to use due to enhanced performance

    • Usable by everyone at company in all roles due to intense collaboration with users during development

    • Flexible enough to handle specialized operations of the business

    • Easily generated high-value reports for management to keep operations efficient

Case Four - Engine Software Calibration Maintenance

A major diesel engine manufacturer was having problems maintaining all the different engine calibrations. The process was done by hand, and as such it was very time consuming and error prone. There were hundreds of files that needed to be updated and documentation that needed to be written for each change. Corrective actions were frequently required and engineers were working 16-hour days to get some of the calibration projects done. No one was really sure if anything was being done correctly. People were doing a very poor job of tracking the changes that were made and it was tough to trace histories.

An Access database was developed to fully manage the calibration process. By the time the program was finished, the company was able to successfully manage and modify the engine calibration software for every engine platform they had. The database generated automated scripts, which applied the appropriate changes to the calibrations, maintained detailed history logs, and performed calibration compares to ensure that the changes were done correctly. In addition, the database was even able to catch and correct errors in the calibrations that had occurred during previous manual changes. The system proved itself during the launch of a new generation of engines, which required constant updates to the calibrations and new calibration releases. This was more complexity for calibration management than had ever been experienced by the company before. A job that originally was distributed across four engineers was now handled flawlessly by one engineer.

    Results:

    • Reduction in setup time to generate calibrations of over 90%

    • Errors in calibrations were eliminated by automatically applying and comparing requested modifications

    • Errors were eliminated in engineering change request process due to automatic generation

    • Consistency in calibration generation process simplified documentation and training requirements

    • Updated calibrations were always available for testing within 24 hours instead of weeks

The engines in trucks like this one depend on having the latest calibrations.
